n8n alternative

Zapier or Make if the server is the problem. Activepieces or Node-RED if the license is.

n8n or ActivepiecesExample
n8n
Pick n8n if
  • You want to self-host or own the account
  • Workflows mix visual steps with real code
  • Each run has many steps and volume is high
Activepieces
Pick Activepieces if
  • Legal approves only OSI licenses, like MIT
  • You embed automation in software you sell
  • Non-technical staff need a simpler builder

Automating your own operations? n8n's license rarely matters. Building it into a product? Activepieces.

★★★★★

Benian Technologies was a great investment. I wanted him to connect my crm to a automatic calling agent. He built so many more connections than I expected. Takes notes of the calls, and the agent speaks the way we would speak to customers. After our discovery and strategy call we established the roadmap and he delivered with flying colors!🚀💪👍

Questions we get asked

What is a good alternative to n8n?

It depends on why you are leaving. Zapier or Make for less upkeep, Activepieces or Node-RED for an OSI open source license, Power Automate for Microsoft shops, and Windmill or Pipedream for code-first teams. Rebuild one real workflow in your top two before deciding.

Is there a fully open source n8n alternative?

Yes. Node-RED is Apache 2.0, the Activepieces community edition is MIT, and Windmill's community edition is AGPLv3. Activepieces and Windmill keep some enterprise features under commercial licenses, so check which edition you would run.

Is n8n really open source?

Not by the Open Source Initiative definition. Its source is public and you can self-host it, but the Sustainable Use License restricts offering n8n itself to others commercially. For internal business automation that limit rarely matters.

Is Activepieces better than n8n?

It is better if you need an MIT license or a simpler builder for non-technical staff. n8n has the larger community and, in general, deeper code support. Build the same workflow in both and compare how it handles errors.

More questions
What is the easiest n8n alternative for a non technical team?

Zapier is usually the easiest to learn, with Make close behind for people comfortable with a visual canvas. Both are hosted, so nobody manages a server. Expect usage-based billing that grows with the number of steps you run.

Can I self host an n8n alternative?

Yes. Activepieces, Node-RED and Windmill can all be self-hosted. Zapier, Make and Pipedream are hosted only. Self hosting means someone on your side owns upgrades, backups and credential security.

The best n8n alternative depends on why you are leaving n8n. If the problem is keeping a server alive, Zapier or Make removes that work. If you need a license approved by the Open Source Initiative, look at Activepieces, Node-RED or Windmill. If your company runs on Microsoft 365 and IT wants one admin console, Power Automate fits. If your team would rather write code than drag nodes, look at Windmill or Pipedream.

A disclosure first. Benian builds most client automations in n8n, inside an account the client owns. We still think n8n is the wrong tool for some businesses, and this page says where. It compares seven options on license, hosting, builder style, code support, AI agent support, community and upkeep. Licenses and features change, so confirm each one on the vendor's site before you commit.

Why teams start looking for an n8n alternative

Nobody owns the server

A self-hosted n8n instance needs upgrades, backups and monitoring. When the person who set it up leaves, the box keeps running until an update breaks a workflow and nobody notices for a week.

Legal flagged the license

n8n uses a fair-code license, not an OSI-approved open source one. A company that resells automation or embeds it in a product for customers can hit its limits and needs a commercial agreement or a different tool.

IT wants one Microsoft console

Companies standardized on Microsoft 365 often want automation governed with the same identities, data policies and admin center they already use, rather than another vendor to review.

The flows outgrew the canvas

Workflows with dozens of Code nodes and nested branches are hard to review visually. Engineers start wanting version control, tests and plain scripts.

The short answer: pick an n8n alternative by the reason you are leaving

Write down the one reason you are unhappy before you look at any tool. Switching to fix a vague feeling often ends with a new tool that has the same problem, or a worse one.

Map that reason to a short list. Less upkeep: Zapier or Make. A true open source license: Activepieces community edition, Node-RED or Windmill. Microsoft governance: Power Automate. Code first: Windmill or Pipedream. If your reason is cost at high volume, compare how each tool counts usage, because per task, per operation and per execution billing produce very different bills for the same workflow. If upkeep is the only complaint, price n8n's own cloud before you rebuild anything.

n8n's license explained: fair-code is not OSI open source

n8n publishes its source code and lets you self-host it, which is why people call it open source. Its main license is the Sustainable Use License, which n8n describes as fair-code. In plain terms, you can use and modify it for your own internal business purposes, but offering n8n itself to others as a product or hosted service is restricted without a commercial agreement. Some enterprise features sit behind a separate enterprise license.

For most businesses automating their own operations, that is not a problem. It matters if you are a software company embedding automation for your customers, or if your legal team only approves OSI licenses. If either applies, the n8n alternative open source shortlist is Activepieces community edition (MIT), Node-RED (Apache 2.0) and Windmill (AGPLv3 for its community edition). AGPL has its own obligations when you modify the code and offer it over a network, so have counsel read it rather than assuming open source means no conditions.

Self hosting trade-offs: upgrades, queue mode, backups and credentials

Self hosting any of these tools moves work onto you. For n8n, that means applying upgrades and reading release notes for breaking changes, running queue mode with Redis and separate worker processes once volume grows, backing up the database that stores workflows and execution history, and protecting the encryption key that secures stored credentials. Lose that key and every saved credential has to be entered again.

Activepieces, Windmill and Node-RED carry the same jobs in different shapes. Hosted tools such as Zapier, Make, Pipedream and Power Automate take them off your plate, and in exchange your workflows and credentials live in the vendor's cloud under its pricing.

A fair test: if nobody on your team can say when the server was last patched and where the last backup is, you do not have a self-hosted platform. You have an unmonitored one. Either assign an owner or use a hosted option.

AI agent features compared across platforms

Every tool here now markets AI features. The useful question is whether the platform can call a language model, give it tools such as a CRM lookup, and route its output through normal logic with error handling. n8n has a dedicated AI Agent node with tool and memory connections. Zapier, Make and Power Automate offer AI steps and agents inside their own ecosystems. Windmill and Pipedream call any model API from code. Activepieces has AI pieces, and Node-RED relies on community nodes or your own code.

Whatever the platform, keep a person in the loop where a wrong answer costs money: refunds, quotes, anything sent to a customer for the first time. Log every model input and output, set a timeout and a fallback path, and measure how often a human overrides the agent. If that override rate does not fall, the agent is creating review work, not removing it.

When n8n is still the better choice

Stay on n8n when you want to self-host or own the account, your workflows mix visual steps with real code, and you run enough volume that per task billing would be painful. n8n counts usage by workflow execution, so a long workflow with many steps costs the same as a short one on its cloud plans, which matters for heavy data work.

Stay too if the real problem is how the workflows were built rather than the tool. Missing error workflows, no naming convention, hard-coded credentials and no documentation will follow you to any platform. Fixing those in place is usually cheaper than a migration.

Moving workflows without losing error handling

There is no reliable converter between these platforms. n8n exports workflows as JSON, but Make, Zapier and Activepieces cannot import that file as working logic, so a migration is a rebuild. The risk is not the happy path. It is the retries, the error branches and the alerts that someone added after an incident two years ago and never wrote down.

  • Inventory every active workflow, its trigger, its run count and its owner. Retire what nobody uses.
  • List the error handling for each one: retries, error workflows, alerts and who receives them.
  • Rebuild one low-risk workflow first and run it in parallel with the original, comparing outputs.
  • Recreate credentials under accounts your business owns, not a contractor's email.
  • Switch triggers over one workflow at a time and keep the old version disabled, not deleted, for a few weeks.

Why the build should live in the client's own account either way

Whichever n8n alternative you choose, the account, the admin login and the credentials should belong to your business. If a consultant builds in their own workspace, leaving them means rebuilding. Benian builds in accounts the client owns, with credentials the client holds, and the client keeps the work.

That is also why we will tell you not to hire us for some of this. If you have five simple workflows and want to move them from n8n to Zapier, a capable staff member can usually do it in-house with the steps above. Bring in help when workflows touch money, customers or several systems at once, or when you are not sure the platform is the problem.
